Maidenhead United produced a resilient first half display and a dominant second half display as they deservedly got the better of league leaders Dorking Wanderers at York Road this afternoon.

The Magpies fully capitalised on the half-time dismissal of Dorking boss Marc White - for some critical comments directed at referee Daniel Baines - and controlled the second half to run out 2-0 winners.

The game was open and end to end in the first period, and Dorking certainly had the better of it, creating a series of opportunities you might normally expect them to take.

Sam Pearson proved difficult for the Magpies defence to pin down, and he pulled a couple of attempts narrowly wide.

But the contest swung on a well taken counter attacking goal from the hosts, with Liam Dulson threading a lovely ball through for Dillon De Silva in the 20th minute and he kept his cool to steer the ball beyond Harrison Foulkes.

With a lead to protect, the Magpies then showed the resolve that was missing from their play in Tuesday’s home defeat to Ebbsfleet United, seeing off several threatening attacks from the visitors to go into half-time with a precious lead.

The visitor’s best moment came on the half-hour mark when Tony Craig rolled a shot against the base of the post, and it bounced kindly into the path of Alfie Rutherford who seemed certain to score. But the excellent Owen Cochrance threw himself in front of the forward’s goal bound effort and deflected it behind for a corner. It was this sort of commitment that gave the Magpies the edge as the sides came off for half-time.

White’s comments to the referee saw him sent off at the break and his top of the league side suffered badly as result.

Maidenhead sensed their vulnerability perhaps, the lack of leadership from the touchline and they went for the jugular.

Better by far from the moment the game restarted, they tested Dorking within seconds when Louie Annesley very nearly put the ball past his own keeper from a Jayden Mitchell-Lawson cutback.

Josh Umerah - who held the ball up brilliantly for the Magpies throughout - then pulled a shot wide from the left edge of the box when he might have done better. His tireless work provided respite for the Magpies in the first half and a springboard for many attacks in the second.

Cochrane also smashed a shot over from the edge of the area in the early stages of the half, taking some roof tiles off the house overlooking York Road in the process.

But the goal Maidenhead’s play deserved in the second half did eventually arrive in the 75th minute, and it was another fabulous - trademark - strike from Dulson.

Collecting the ball on the edge of the box, he controlled the ball in an instant, turned and fired an unstoppable drive into the top corner and past a despairing Foulkes.

It put the seal on a dominant second half display and a deserved win which lifts the Magpies up to fifth in the league table, just three points behind second placed Worthing.

They might have had one or two more goals in the closing stages – such was their dominance by this stage – but 2-0 was more than enough to send the Magpies faithful home happy.

It’s also a performance which should give the team the belief they need to not only finish in the play-offs but potentially grasp one of the higher places. The result also moves them to within nine points of Dorking Wanderers in top spot.

They’re back in action at home to Weston-Super-Mare next Saturday.

White addressed his dismissal after the game: “I got a straight red card and basically my exact words were ‘I think you need to drop down a level, you’re not good enough’. There was no swearing or one bit of language, but I appreciate they are negative comments towards a referee

“First half we’ve absolutely battered them. We’ve put so much work into the first half going up the hill. We could have been 3-0 up before they scored. We’ve dominated really but conceded a goal on the break. The story of the game then is we gassed. We put a lot of work into the first half.”

Maidenhead’s assistant boss Aaron O’Brien said: “We know they’re a good team and they showed that in the first half. We knew we needed to be a bit more aggressive in our press and braver and we did that in the second half. We limited them to half chances really. They’re a good team and to do that, shows how well we played today, we thoroughly deserved it.”
